Xiaomi Redmi 5A Review: Average but value for money

08:54:00

Xiaomi is constantly launching several variants in the smartphone market with different prices. And all of them have given attractive specifications, which has led to a challenge. Eight months ago, Xiaomi launched its cheapest smartphone Redmi 4A in India and since then it has remained at the top of the budget segment since then. And we have also suggested buying it in the budget category many times too. Now, Xiaomi is replacing his entry level Redmi 4A with Redmi 5A. There is very little difference between these two smartphones. In the name of patriotism in their name such as the Micromax India Series and Carbon A40 Indian, Xiaomi has described his Redmi 5A as the "Country Smartphone". But the meaning of the company is not ambiguous from this title and it may mean less than the price. Apart from this, the phone is made in India and it promises a strong battery life. But, the most important thing about this launch is that Xiaomi is giving a discount of Rs 1,000 on his lower-end model, after which the Redmi 5 comes with a 2 GB RAM and 16 GB storage variant worth Rs 4,999.
We are eager to know what is the revenge in the new Redmi 5A and what benefits customers will get in the new phone. Let us know in the review.

Xiaomi Redmi 5A Look
If you have used an entry-level Android smartphone in the last one or two years, there is not much to say about the look of the Redmi 5A. It is made of plastic and the design is also common. However, a small metallic finish can be seen on the rear. Xiaomi says that the phone will be sold in Dark Gray, Gold and Rose Gold Color. But now only two options are listed for the first cell. The next part of our Gold Review Unit is white. And we think the Dark Gray that comes with Black Front will much better.

Radmi 5A has a 5 inch screen but there is a lot of space left over and down the screen. It is easy to use the phone with one hand. Despite the thickness of 8.35 millimeters, the grip is good and the phone weighs 137 grams. Compared with Redmi 4A, the difference is very low. There is a difference of less than 1 millimeter in length and width of both variants.

The capacitive navigation buttons below the screen are not backlit. As always, Xiaomi has given a status indicator under the Home button, which is turned on when the phone is charging, otherwise it seems completely missing.

The power and volume buttons are given in the phone on the right and the phone has two trays on the left side which can be used for a microSD card in addition to two nano-SIM cards. The camera has an LED flash at the rear of the phone and the speaker grill of the phone is downwards on the rear. There is a micro-USB port on the bottom edge, but upwards you will get a 3.5mm audio jack. A special feature is the IR AMR on the top edge of the phone. It can be used to control the home appliance.

In the box you will get a Micro-USB cable and charger. The special thing is that it seems that the company is paying more attention to Radmi Broading, there is a redmi branding on the front and back of the box, while the name and logo of Xiaomi have been written in lowercase.

Xiaomi Redmi 5a Specifications and Software
It is astonishing that most of the typical Redmi 5A specs are similar to Radmi 4A. The phone has the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor which runs on 1.4GHz. The 5-inch screen comes with 720x1280 pixel resolution. The phone has a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. Apart from this, the phone has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM radio and GPS support. You get 2GB of RAM and 16GB storage and 3 GB RAM and 32 GB stores. Compare both phones so nothing is different.

Redmi 5A has 3000 mAh battery which is less than 3120 mAh given in Radmi 4A. The phone has a different microSD card slot which is better than the hybrid dual-sim slot given in the Radmi 4A. In the new phone, the Nano SIM card can be used instead of the micro SIM card and the capacity of MicroSD card has been increased from 128 GB to 256 GB. The only difference is that there is something better in both the phones, then something less

In addition to IR ammeter, there is no special feature in the phone. In place of any device with features such as fingerprint reader, front flash, bigger battery, secondary rear camera or 18: 9 screen, Xiaomi remains on an allrounder device at this price.

But talking about the software, some new things have come up. Xiaomi Redmi runs Android 7.1.2 on Nougat based Custom MUI 9 in the 5A. This is a single layer UI which has no way of enabling app drawer. We saw that there are some unnecessary animations on the icon on the homescreen. Apart from this there is also the option to choose some themes. You can also download many more themes from the Themes app. With this, wallpapers, fonts and ringtones can also be downloaded. All of these seem to be free now but it may be that Xiaomi started recovering money for these downloads in the future.

If you want you can bring a quick toggle to the Notification Center. The settings for this are given in the option in the app. For privacy, there is also an option to set up second space user profiles, set gesture shortcuts and do additional work through the Android navigation buttons. The phone also has a dual app function through which you can run two accounts for an app. App access can be limited by app lock. The phone does not have a fingerprint sensor, so you have to use the unlock pattern.

Xiaomi has pre-installed apps in the phone such as Microsoft Office App, such as Skype Lite, Amazon Shopping, WPS Office and UC News. Among the other features of the phone in Xiaomi, we have a number of custom apps in place of App Store, Xiaomi's Store for Storage, Mi Community Forum App, Mi Drop (Clone like Apple AirDrop) and default Android app.

Xiaomi Redmi 5A Performance
As entry-level phones are increasing, Xiaomi is able to maintain a better coordination in price and performance. Redmi 5A is a powerful device for everyday work such as web browsing, social apps and messaging. We also played graphics games from the phone, though the performance was not very good. We had a little trouble in the phone when we played heavy tests or played games. The rest of the work in the phone is correct but the situation becomes worse when the second space feature is enabled.

Speaking of the benchmark, the device scored magnificently. Our test unit was equipped with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB of storage. That is, a variant of more RAM will definitely improve the phone's performance.

The phone's screen is quite sharp and the small text also looks good. Viewing angles are great and brightness is also sufficient for outdoor use. However, the colors do not come up and there are some dulls during the video and games. Although there is a speaker grill on the entire rear panel, the sound actually comes out from the same place. The audio in the phone is a little weak and the volume at high volumes bursts badly.
Swipe right on the Redmi 5A lock screen, you will see a menu with a shortcut for remote app and mi home. Remote app is basic and you will take a little time to process the home appliances. In addition to the Indian TV, set-top box and AC brand in the phone, there is an IR profile for the private-label store brand. Unlike some other low-priced phones, third-party apps can also use IR ammeter. We can use the Home app to control popular air purifiers such as shaomi devices with Wi-Fi capability.

Camera
Cameras at Redmi 5 have an average, but once again this low-cost phone will keep us in balance with our expectations. There is not much detailing in the photo. The edges are often blurred in the object and the texture is not very reproducible. We saw that the colors are very light and it happens even when viewing photos on the phone's screen. We were successful in taking some fantastic close-up shots but the far shots were not good enough. The quality of the pictures becomes very bad in the night and we failed to capture any such thing which did not have an artificial light. Autofocus works faster during the day in the phone. Video recording can be up to 1080 pixels, but we found that the clip looks very sticky.

In the front camera of the phone, by default the beautification is applied, and the faces seem to be very gimmicky. The phone has a pro beauty mode and a smart beauty mode. Pro mode lets you find slim and skin slider while smart mode tries to identify your age and gender. Disabling them makes it clear that the front camera is very weak.

The camera app is very common and you need to tap twice when you switch from the default mode to the menu. But in many modes you will not get the menu.

Battery
Xiaomi praised the battery life of Redmi 5A and described it as part of 'Country Smartphone'. And we were glad that with normal use, the battery of the phone remained 20 percent even after a whole day. In our HD Video Loop Test, the phone's battery lasted 11 hours and 9 minutes, which affects.

Conclusion
Shaomi has influenced us this time with low cost devices. However, anything in Radmi 5A is nothing new or new to Radmi 4A. If you are able to buy 2 GB RAM / 16 GB storage under the launch offer for Rs 4,999, you will not regret. And with the regular retail price of Rs. 5,999, you will not get many options that can challenge this phone. This is a great phone for smartphone users for the first time. The camera quality of the phone is a big slim and if the camera is important for you then you have to spend a little more.

The 32 GB variant is priced at Rs 6,999 and the deal is a bit less attractive. There are many more options in this price and you will find bigger screens, fingerprint sensors than the RAM and storage at this price. It is worth noting that Raidmi 4 (Review) and Redmi Y1 Lite are in this list. And instead we recommend waiting for the launch of a much stronger Redmi 5.
